WRITING PERSONAL LETTERS AND E-MAIL MESSAGES

In Spanish, there is a great deal of difference between the salutations andclosings in a personal letter and those in a business letter.
Business letterstend to be formal and respectful, but personal letters are warm and caring.
Here are some ways to begin and end a personal letter or an e-mail message.

Note thatthe question word dónde has the form adónde when used with ir, viajar, and otherverbs of motion. The form de dónde is used with ser to express origin.

Examples:

¿De dóndeson Uds.? Where are you from?

Mostinformation questions are formed by inverting the subject and verb.

Theinterrogative word is generally the first word of the question.

¿Qué seponen los estudiantes para ir aclase? What do the students put on in order to go to class?

Por qué(why) is written as two words. The word porque means "because" and isused in answers.

¿Por qué te quitas la chaqueta? Why are you taking off your jacket?

Porque hace calor. Because it’s hot.

QuestionsRequiring a Yes / No Answer

Astatement can become a question by adding the tag words ¿no? or ¿verdad? to

the end ofthat statement.

Examples:
Pedro va al trabajo temprano, ¿no? - Pedro goes to work early, doesn’t he?

Martha se aburre en clase, ¿verdad? - Martha gets bored at class, doesn't she?

A statementcan also become a question by inversion, that is, placing the subject after theverb. When using inversion to form a question that contains more than just asubject and verb, the word order is generally:

VERB + REMAINDER + SUBJECT

¿Van a trabajar temprano Uds.?

However,when the remainder of the sentence contains more words than the subject,

then theword order is generally:

Conjugation of verb OÍR

The verb oír is a very important irregular verb in Spanish.
It is translated into English as to hear. It´s irregular in the Present, and Preterit tenses, and it follows the regular conjugation in the Imperfect and Future tenses (stem of the verb + endings).

It is important to notice the difference between "oír" and "escuchar". Oír means to perceive a sound through the ear, escuchar, instead, is the English equivalent of the verb "to listen". Hearing (oír) is an involuntary action, but listening (escuchar) implies a deliberate willingness to understand.

The following are some expressions with verb oir, commonly used in the everyday´s life:

oí hablar de él - I've heard of him

oí decir que se va - I've heard he's leaving

como quien oye llover - it's like water off a duck's back

¡me va a oír! -I'm going to give him an earful

oír misa - to go to mass

no oigo nada - I can't hear anything (or a thing)

Saber vs. Conocer

We use Saber to express or describe what we know how to do, by following it ‎with an infinitive.‎

We use Saber when we talk about information.‎

The verb REÍR means to laugh.‎ Its reflexive "reírse" has the same meaning. Dictionaries give the same definition for both, but in the everyday usage reírse is the most common of the two. While “yo reí” is translated as "I laughed," you will usually say “yo me reí”.

If you are saying what makes a person laugh, you use the verb “REÍR” on its infinitive form, using the verb HACER as an auxiliary, in this case :

- Ese payaso hizo reír a todos los niños.
- That clown made all the children laugh.

Reírse de - When followed by "de", the reflexive form usually means "to make fun of" or "to laugh at":

The verb HABER is an auxiliary verb, and it's an accurate translation of the verb "to HAVE" in English, when it's used as auxiliary.

As the verb "to HAVE", this verb is used as auxiliary in the perfect tenses. As it happens in English, also in Spanish the perfect tenses are formed by using a form of the verb HABER (to HAVE), followed by the past participle.

Another common use of the spanish verb HABER is the meaning (in English, of course_ of "there is" or "there are".

Before you learn about the subject of this article, the two fundamental verbs in Spanish you need to know to be introduced in the world of the Candombe are:

Candombe is an African derived rhythm that has been an important part of Uruguayan culture for over two hundred years. It was recognized by Unesco recently as a unique form of folklore native from Uruguay and stemming from roots in the African continent.

This rhythm traveled to Uruguay from Africa with black slaves, it was their way of communication then, and is still going strong in the streets. The candombe rhythm is created when the three tambores (drums) are played together.

Frequently, many drummers assemble onto the streets of Montevideo (from 3 to 80 drums), playing their drums under the moon lit sky.

The candombe rhythm is created by the use of three drums (tambores), tambor piano, tambor chico and tambor repique. When these three drums heat up, it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

TIPS FOR LEARNING SPANISH VERBS

Tip # 1: MEMORY GAME - make your own flashcards.

1 - Cut out one card for each conjugation. Count all subject pronouns in!

2 - On one side of the card write the Spanish conjugation; On the other side, the equivalent in English.

3 - Everyday, twice a day for about a week, read one side of the card and try to remember what the translation on the other side is.

4 - The translation you get right, place it on the side; the ones you get wrong, place it in the back of the pile.

5 - Do it from Spanish to English first. Alternate, on the week of practice, between the two directions: Spanish to English, then English to Spanish.

From my experience, one can get absolute fluency in remembering the right conjugation instantly within a week of practice.

Peru is a country that inspires the adventurous and even mystic spirit in many people. It is a country proud of its Inca heritage, as well as its European culture.

I've listed here a number of Peruanismos (expressions and words used by Peruvians) which can come in handy in next trip to this magical South American country. As Verbs in Spanish deals mainly (well, solely :-) with verbs, I've limited my list to a number of typical Peruvian expressions which contain verbs in them.

Meanings and uses of the verb SENTIR‎ ‎

The verb sentir (and its reflexive sentirse) usually means "to feel ‎an emotion".‎

‎- Me siento bien. I feel good.‎

‎- Rosa dijo que siente una gran alegría con la llegada de su primer nieto. Rosa said she feels a great joy with the arrival of her first ‎grandson.‎

‎- Juan se siente preparado para el examen. Juan feels ‎ready for the test.‎

‎- Sandra se siente satisfecha de vivir en la casa nueva. Sandra feels satisfied of living in the new house.‎

The verb sentir can also be used to express physical conditions :‎

‎- Siento mucho dolor en el hombro izquierdo. I feel a big ‎pain in my left shoulder.‎

‎- Marta siente mareos porque está es su tercer mes de embarazo. Marta feels dizzy because she´s in the third month of her ‎pregnancy. ‎

In South America almost all the countries speak Castilian Spanish. There are some differences between European Spanish and South American.

Most notably, in Spain the pronoun ‎‎"vosotros" is used while in South American spanish "ustedes" (Uds., when abbreviated) is more common. ‎The second big difference with the original Spanish from Spain, is the ‎pronunciation of the letter "z", which in South America, is pronounced as "s".‎

But there are significant differences as well, between the countries, in the way ‎they speak Spanish. As it happens in all the world, each region has its own way ‎to express their every day language, mixed from the street´s culture, and foreign ‎languages as well.

The word to call those regional differences is, in spanish, ‎‎"modismos".‎

Chile has their own "modismos",called "chilenismos". Most of them are very ‎funny and have double meaning, and a sense of humor.‎

There are lots of Chilenismos, but we are going to focus specially in their particular use ‎of some verbs, and their meanings.‎

The verb decir is a very important verb used in everyday's spanish language. It is translated as to say and to tell. It is irregular in the Present, Future and Preterit tenses, and it follows the regular conjugation in the Imperfect tense (stem of the verb + endings).

Examples:

Do you know what "tomar mate" means ?

"Tomar mate" is a very common expression if you go to the "Rio de la Plata" area, in South America.

But "mate" is not only drunk in Uruguay and Argentina, also Paraguay, Bolivia and South of Brasil enjoy this drink.

What is "MATE"?

Mate is an infusion of the "yerba mate" (mate herb), made from leaves and stems of a powerful rainforest tree. Yerba mate was discovered centuries ago by the indigenous people in South America and has been revered as the “drink of the gods” and consumed to enhance, vitality, clarity, and well-being.

Mate has many healthy benefits including beeing a tonic, diuretic and reducer of fatigue, stimulates nervous and muscular systems, and helps the elimination and the digestive problems.

Most of all, tomar mate is a common social practice, an invitation to sit, talk, and share with family and friends, that visitors find very attractive.

The spanish verbs related with this practice are : tomar mate, meaning to drink it, and cebar mate, refering to the action of putting the water in the recipient.

Basically, a reflexive verb is one that needs to have a reflexive pronoun attached to it.

What are Reflexive Pronouns?

In English, reflexive pronouns are words like myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves and themselves.

Reflexive verbs - also called reflexive constructions – are very popular in Spanish (more so than in English). These verbs indicate that the “doer” of the action receives the action back to him.

For example, when you say in English “I look at myself in the mirror”, the doer “I” receives back the action “look in the mirror”. This, of course, is indicated by the use of the reflexive pronoun “myself”.

Reflexive pronouns in Spanish may also indicate who the doer is. In the sentence, “Nos duchamos por la mañana” the word “nos” (ourselves) indicates that “we” are the doer. There is no need, albeit it’s not wrong to say it, to use the word “nosotros”.

A reflexive construction always has two (sometimes three) main elements:

The subject (not always needed) + a reflexive pronoun + verb

See these examples:

- Nos duchamos por la mañana. (We shower in the morning.)

- Siempre te miras al espejo. (You always look at yourself in the mirror.)

- Me afeito todos los días. (I shave (myself) every day.)

As said before, Reflexive verbs in English are not quite as common as in Spanish. However, the use of reflexive pronouns in English is indeed equivalent to the reflexive pronouns in Spanish. Example:

Leo se defendió. (Leo defended himself.)

Notice that the persons Ud., Uds., él/ ella, and ellos/ ellas have the same reflexive pronoun : se.

To conjugate a reflexive verb, use the corresponding reflexive pronoun.
Use the following model to form reflexive verbs :

bañar (se) (to bathe, to take a bath)

(Yo) me baño

(Tú) te bañas

(Él, Ella, Ud.) se baña

(Nosotros/as) nos bañamos

(Vosotros/as) os bañáis

(Ellos/as, Uds.) se bañan

List of reflexive verbs in Spanish

Spanish has numerous reflexive verbs. Because they are used with their corresponding reflexive pronouns, textbooks and dictionaries usually list them with the pronoun se attached to the infinitive lavar (se), afeitar (se), vestir (se), etc.

Remember that their English equivalents may not necessarly be used in a reflexive way (with –self, -selves).

Here there is a list of 22 reflexive verbs of common use. Remember that practically any verb that takes a direct object may be used with a reflexive pronoun:

The Spanish verb IR is translated as to go.

Uses of verb IR

‎

The most common use of verb IR is "ir a" (in the present) followed ‎by an infinitive. This use is the equivalent of the English "going to", and it's so common, ‎that in the spoken language it's the way to express the Future.‎

The imperfect is used to talk about a past action without specifying when ‎it began or ended. We use the imperfect when we want to describe what used to ‎happen or what happened regularly in the past.‎

The Preterite of -IR Verbs - Part I

The Preterite is one of several past tenses used in Spanish.

The Spanish preterit is often equivalent to the Past simple in English and you use it to ‎narrate actions that started and ended in the past.

This post teaches you how to conjugate Spanish verbs that end in "-ir" (abrir, partir, dormir, etc. - I've posted a list of 21 Spanish ir Spanish verbs).

It is simple to conjugate all regular IR verbs in the past tense: Drop the "ir" and place the following endins:

This post deals with the differences between the two different past tenses in Spanish. Here you will learn and practice both tenses.

Here is the list of Spanish conjugation verb endings for the preterit of ER verbs:

(Remember, to conjugate any ER verb using these endings, drop off the -er ending of the verb and add these.)

The imperfect is used to talk about a past action without specifying when it began or ended. We use the imperfect when we want to describe what used to happen or what happened regularly in the past.

Past Tense of ER Verbs - Part I

As the name says it, the "Preterit" denotes an action or situation that started and ended in the past, ‎without relation with the present.‎

The good news is that all regular verbs in Spanish that end in er will follow the same conjugation, which makes things a little easier.

But of course life could not be that simple, could it? :-) So here I've started a section (a long one) where all irregular er verbs will be listed containing their conjugation, rules, examples and exercises. It will help you to learn each one by heart as you go along with your studies of Spanish verbs.

If you've been following this blog through its very beginning, you should be already accustomed to the basic ways Spanish verbs follow their respective conjugations.

This post now is the beginning of a new series presenting the conjugation of ER verbs in Spanish, starting, of course, with the regular ER verbs.

As the name says it, all regular verbs follow the same pattern of conjugation, which means that all you need to do is memorize the appropriate ending for the infinitive of each verb.

The endings for all regular ER Spanish verbs in the Present are:

Again in this case, the change will be only in the preterit, and only in the person YO, because it's then that it needs to take an "é".

AR verbs in Spanish have many irregularities.

Let´s take a look to other AR irregular verbs, and we will use the verb PENSAR (to think) as a model of this kind.

The verb PENSAR ( to think), is only irregular in the Present Tense.

Yo pienso

Tú piensas

Él, ella, usted piensa

Nosotros, nosotras pensamos

Vosotros, vosotras pensáis

Ellos, ellas, ustedes piensan

As you can see here, the stem changes for some pronouns, from "pens" (of the infinitive ) to "piens".

Some important things about irregular verbs:

In the present the "g" doesn't change (Yo despliego, Tú despliegas, etc) but in the Preterite, see what happens:

Spanish Imperfect and Spanish Preterit

This post deals with the differences between the two different past tenses in Spanish: the imperfect and the preterit. Here you will learn and practice both tenses.

Here is the list of Spanish conjugation verb endings for the preterit of AR verbs:

Yo -é

Tu -aste

Usted, él, ella -ó

Nosotros (as) -amos

Vosotros (as) -asteis

Ustedes, ellos, ellas -aron

The preterite tense implies that the past action had a beginning and an end, even if sometimes that beginning and end are not specifically mentioned in the sentence.

Examples:

- Miriam cantó una hermosa canción anoche, en el cumpleaños de su hijo menor.
(This action clearly happened and finished in the past : at Miriam youngest son's birthday.)

- Miriam cantó una hermosa canción.
(In this second sentence, the beginning and the end are not established.)

The following expressions of past, are used for the preterite:

Ayer (yesterday)

Anteayer (day before yesterday)

Anoche (last night)

El otro día (the other day)

Entonces (then)

Esta mañana (this morning)

Esta tarde (this afternoon)

La semana pasada (last week)

El mes pasado (last month)

El año pasado (last year)

The imperfect is used for actions in the past that did not have a definite beginning or a definite end.

- Miriam cantaba muy bien.

( As you can see, in this cases the expressions of time are non-specific. )

The following expressions are used for the imperfect:

Cada día (every day)

Cada mes (every month)

Cada año (every year)

Spanish AR Verbs - Future

Hi there!

Today, you're going to learn how to conjugate AR Spanish verbs in the future tense.

This is one of the simplest forms of conjugation in Spanish because the "endings" for each subject pronoun is exactly the same for all Spanish verb forms "ar", "er" and "ir".

CONJUGATION

In many ways, the conjugation of AR verbs in the future is the easiest to memorize.

Look at the conjugation of the Spanish verb VIAJAR:

Yo viajaré

Tú viajarás

Usted viajará

Él viajará

Ella viajará

Nosotros (as) viajaremos

Vosotros (as) viajaréis

Ustedes viajarán

Ellos (as) viajarán

Noticed something? The verb remains intact. You add the appropriate ending to each subject pronoun.

TIP FOR LEARNING SPANISH :-)

At the end of this post you can find a list of 31 common verbs in Spanish ending with AR.

I suggest you make flashcards with them and "play" a memory game with yourself (or with others) which will help memorize not only the verbs themselves but also be able to retrieve the correct conjugation immediately.

Here is what you:

1 - Cut out one card for each conjugation. Count all subject pronouns in!

2 - On one side of the card write the Spanish conjugation; On the other side, the equivalent in English.

3 - Everyday, twice a day for about a week, read one side of the card and try to remember what the translation on the other side is.

4 - The translation you get right, place it on the side; the ones you get wrong, place it in the back of the pile.

5 - Do it from Spanish to English first. Alternate, on the week of practice, between the two directions: Spanish to English, then English to Spanish.

From my experience, one can get absolute fluency in remembering the right conjugation instantly within a week of practice.

Verb ESTAR - Preterite and Imperfect

As all other verbs in Spanish, also the verb ESTAR in the past has two different forms. Broadly speaking the first form is used for a more specific point in time, whereas the second form is more used to describe a longer period in the past tense.

It is hard to think of translation in English for either situation of this verb in the past, but we could say that both forms can be translated as "was" or "were".

The first form of the verb estar in the past is mainly as the simple past in the English language.

The second form of the verb estar in the past either infers to a "longer a period of time" than the first form (above), or to a specific time in the past.

Don't worry if that doesn't sound clear now, the examples below will clarify the matter a little bit.

Note: The sentence refers to a "long period of time".

Los novios estaban muy felices en Paris.
Note: Even without a specific time in the past, it is clear from this sentence that the time is long and that it happened in a specific time in the past (when they were in Paris).

Miguel estaba triste.
Note: Also denotes a specific time in the past (He was sad when I saw him or heard from Miguel).

La puerta estaba abierta quando llegué.
Note: Also here the sentence denotes a specific time in the past.

USES AND EXAMPLES

The verb ESTAR is used to express

Location:

- Nosotros estamos en España.
(We are in Spain.)

- Martha está en su casa.
(Martha is at her home.)

- Mi hermano está en el colegio.
(My brother is at school.)

Temporary conditon:

- Yo estoy muy contento con la noticia.
(I am very happy with the news.)

- Vosotros estáis preocupados.
(You are worried.)

- Usted está a cargo de este grupo de turistas.
(You are in charge of this group of tourists.)

Used with another verb to express the Present Progressive

(more about that later, but you will get the meaning of it through the translations). But it looks like this:

Verb estar + verb + ending

The "ending" may be "-ando" (-ar verbs), "-endo" (-er and -ir verbs).

Vosotros estáis estudiando español.
(You are studying Spanish.)

Ellos están caminando por el parque.
(They are walking in the park.)
