Conjugation of verb SER (Past)

The verb BE in the Past Tense is a little trickier than its Present Tense counterpart.

The reason for that is that while English only uses "was" and "were" to express the past tense of "to be"*, Spanish has two completely different sets for using SER in the past.

On this post, you will learn how to conjugate the verb SER in the past (both forms), as well as the different uses of both.

Verb SER in the past - USED TO...

The first form of verb SER in the past can be roughly translated as "used to be"; In other words, something "was" in the past, usuallyy for a long time, but "isn't" any longer.

Anyway, it will get clearer as we go along. First, concentrate on learning how to conjugate SER in the past (first set):

Yo era.

eras.

Ud. (Usted) era.

Él era

Ella era

Nosotros (as) éramos

Vosotros/as erais

Ustedes/ ellos/ ellas eran

EXAMPLES:

Yo era muy feliz en aquellos tiempos.
(I used to be happy in those days.)

Note: See the idea of "long time" here?)

********************

Mi madre era la mejor cocinera de toda la región.
(My mother used to be the best cook of the whole region.)

Note: Here it is implied that she was the best cook for a long time.

********************

Ellos no eran las personas apropiadas para trabajar en ese proyecto.
(They weren't the right people for working on this project)

Note: Still here the "era" implies a long period of time.

********************

(This opportunity was for you.)

Note: They are talking about a period of time (long) in which the opportunity would have been good.

********************

Silvia era la más bonita de la fiesta.
(Silvio was the most beautiful (girl) in the party.)

My note: There are cases where both forms of pasts would be correct, this is one of them.

Verb SER in the past - "WAS" and "WERE"...

Now this next set of verb SER in the past is very interesting. For a start, the conjugation of this verb is exactly the same as the conjugation of the verb 'IR' (go) in the past tense. Why you ask? I have no idea...:-)

Its official name is Preterite Perfect Simple (fancy name, huh?) and it translates in English as "was" and "were".

This form of verb SER in the past usually refers to a recent past or a specific past moment in time.

TIP FOR LEARNING SPANISH :-)

Don't try and learn all at once!

As with anything, learning verbs in Spanish takes practice and a certain dosage of perseverance.

First, learn how to conjugate the verbs well. Make it second nature to you which pronoun goes with which verb conjugation. It is essential.

Only after you feel confident you know how to conjugate them well (it should take about a week of practice), then go deeper into knowing exactly how to use them.
