Questions Requesting Information

¿cómo?  how?

¿cuál(es)?  which?

¿cuándo?  when?

¿cuánto(a)?  how much?

¿cuántos(as)?  how many?

¿dónde?  where?

¿qué?  what?

¿quién(es)?  who?

¿por qué?  why?

Note that the question word dónde has the form adónde when used with ir, viajar, and other verbs of motion. The form de dónde is used with ser to express origin.

Examples:
Ana, ¿adónde vas? Ana, where are you going?

¿De dónde son Uds.? Where are you from?

Most information questions are formed by inverting the subject and verb. 

The interrogative word is generally the first word of the question.

¿Qué se ponen los estudiantes para ir a clase? What do the students put on in order to go to class?

Por qué (why) is written as two words. The word porque means "because" and is used in answers.

¿Por qué te quitas la chaqueta? Why are you taking off your jacket?

Porque hace calor. Because it’s hot.
