Past Tense of ER Verbs - Part II

On this post you will learn how to conjugate and use the Imperfect for ER Spanish verbs.

The imperfect is used to talk about a past action without specifying when it began or ended. We use the imperfect when we want to describe what used to happen or what happened regularly in the past.

In English, this verb form can be translated into used to or would.

The imperfect is formed by dropping the endings of the infinitive and adding the following endings :

CONJUGATION

DEBER

Yo debía

Tú debías

Usted debía

Él debía

Ella debía

Nosotros (as) debíamos

Vosotros (as) debíais

Ustedes debían

Ellos debían

Ellas debían

EXAMPLES

- Mi abuela tejía toda la ropa para sus nietos.
(My grandmother used to sew the clothes for her grandchildren.)


- Yo debía correr todas las mañanas, para llegar a tiempo a clase.
(I had to run every morning in order not to be late to school.)


- Tú bebías mucha agua en verano.
(You used to drink a lot of water in summer.)


- Sofía amaba a su esposo, y el correspondía a sus sentimientos.
(Sofia loved her husband and he would correspond to her feelings.)



- Ellos era buenos alumnos y aprendían muy rapidamente.
(They were good pupils and would learn very fast.)
