The imperfect is used to talk about a past action without specifying when it began or ended. We use the imperfect when we want to describe what used to happen or what happened regularly in the past.
In English, this verb form can be translated into used to or would. (see translations below)
Regarding to the Conjugation, the good news are that almost ALL the verbs in spanish are regular in the Imperfect Tense.
The conjugation for -IR verbs is the same as for -ER verbs in the Imperfect.
The Spanish imperfect for IR verbs is formed by dropping the -ir ending of the infinitive and adding the following endings :
Yo subía
Tú subías
Usted subía
Él subía
Ella debía
Nosotros (as) subíamos
Vosotros (as) subíais
Ustedes subían
Ellos subían
Ellas subían
- Mi hermana nunca discutía conmigo, cuando éramos pequeñas.
(My sister never used to argue with me when we were little.)
- Cuando estábamos de vacaciones, permitíamos a nuestros hijos mirar televisión hasta tarde.
(When we were in vacation, we used to allow our children to watch TV until late.)
- Los niños subían corriendo las escaleras de la escuela.
(The children used to run up the stairs at school.)
- Cada vez que yo hablaba, tú me interrumpías.
(Each time I would speak you would interrupt me.)
