The verb sentir is another very important irregular –IR verb. It is translated as to feel, and, depending on the context it can also be translated as to hear and to smell. It is irregular in the Present, and Preterit tenses, and it follows the regular conjugation in the Imperfect and Future tenses (stem of the verb + endings).

Meanings and uses of the verb SENTIR
The verb sentir (and its reflexive sentirse) usually means "to feel an emotion".
- Me siento bien. I feel good.
- Rosa dijo que siente una gran alegría con la llegada de su primer nieto. Rosa said she feels a great joy with the arrival of her first grandson.
- Juan se siente preparado para el examen. Juan feels ready for the test.
- Sandra se siente satisfecha de vivir en la casa nueva. Sandra feels satisfied of living in the new house.
The verb sentir can also be used to express physical conditions :
- Siento mucho dolor en el hombro izquierdo. I feel a big pain in my left shoulder.
- Marta siente mareos porque está es su tercer mes de embarazo. Marta feels dizzy because she´s in the third month of her pregnancy.
- Juan siente mucho cansancio cuando conduce por muchas horas. Juan feels very tired when he drives too many hours.
The verb sentir is commonly used as "escuchar" or "oir" (listen or hear)
- Mi vecina sintió un ruido y creyó que eran ladrones. My neighbor heard a noise and she thought there were thieves.
- Nosotros sentimos el timbre, y abrimos la puerta. We heard the bell, and opened the door.
